Monsoon Season 2018:

Fresh Earth Fissure activity in South-Central Arizona

With the onset of the 2018 monsoon season, we anticipate reactivation of some existing earth fissures and the potential appearance of new fissures where they have been reported previously in Cochise, La Paz, Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal Counties.

The Arizona Geological Survey continues to map and monitor earth fissures. The most up-to-date earth fissure study maps are available at the interactive Natural Hazards in Arizona viewer.

Many areas of Maricopa County are impacted by fissures, subsidence or soils with high clay content.

Earth Fissure Planning Maps

On June 4, 2007, the Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) released individual 1:250,000 scale, earth fissure planning maps of Maricopa County. The maps show all currently known earth fissures.

Extremely Detailed Maps

The AZGS is in the process of preparing highly detailed fissure maps to be completed area by area over the next few years. A few of these more detailed maps have recently become available and can be accessed on the AZGS website.
