Peoria Avenue Improvement Project: Citrus Road to SR303

The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is conducting a study to determine what roadway improvements are needed to address storm water drainage, driveway access, connection to SR303, and future travel along the Peoria Avenue corridor.

MCDOT is considering three alternatives with varying features. Proposed improvements include: two lanes each direction, traffic signals, roundabouts, turn lanes, access management, raised medians, flush medians, curbing, sidewalks, and storm water drainage channels. Please see each alternative below for more details.

Project Area (Citrus Road to SR303)

Alternative 1
This alternative will provide raised medians with intermittent access points (median breaks), as well as roundabouts at Peoria Avenue/Citrus Road and Peoria Avenue/175th Avenue, and a traffic signal at Peoria Avenue/Cotton Lane. The existing north curb and shared use path will remain.TT0576-Peoria-Ave-Exhibit-Alt1-071921 Opens in new windowClick image above for full size exhibit

What to expect after construction:

  • Reduced roadway flooding
  • Reduced traffic backed up at intersections
  • Slower traffic at Citrus Road and 175th Avenue roundabouts
  • Easier to get in and out of properties - vehicles can make a U-turn at roundabouts

Features

  • Roundabouts
  • Raised medians
  • Traffic signals

Alternative 2
This alternative will provide raised medians with intermittent access points (median breaks), as well as a roundabout at Peoria Avenue/175th Avenue, and traffic signals at Peoria Avenue/Citrus Road and Peoria Avenue/Cotton Lane. The existing north curb and shared use path to be removed and reconstructed.

What to expect after construction:

  • Reduced roadway flooding
  • Reduced traffic backed up at intersections
  • Slower traffic at 175th Avenue roundabout
  • Easier to get in and out of properties - vehicles can make a U-turn at roundabout
  • Removes and reconstructs curb, sidewalk, landscaping, and lighting on north side of Peoria Avenue

Features:

  • Roundabouts
  • Raised medians
  • Median breaks
  • Traffic signals

Alternative 3
This alternative will have raised medians only at traffic signals at Peoria Avenue/Citrus Road, Peoria Avenue/175th Avenue, and Peoria Avenue/Cotton Lane. The existing north curb and shared use path will remain.

What to expect after construction:

  • Reduced roadway flooding
  • Reduced traffic backed up at intersections
  • Medians only at traffic signals – more access points (median breaks) for adjacent properties
  • Possible increased traffic may cause delays entering or exiting properties adjacent to Peoria Avenue

Features:

  • Raised medians
  • Median breaks
  • Traffic signals

(No Build Alternative)
Existing Conditions to Continue:

  • No additional County paving at this time
  • Existing historical flooding of roadway will continue
  • Existing pavement and barriers will remain
  • Existing conditions incompatible with future development
  • Possible traffic delays at intersections
  • Possible increased traffic may cause delays entering or exiting properties adjacent to Peoria Avenue
